This study was intended for agronomy majors at the University of Matanzas, Cuba, to acquire the skill at solving biostatistical problems. Knowledge was tested, lectures were assessed, and students were surveyed. Shortcomings were the lack of knowledge of the subject; concepts and properties were not carefully examined; difficulties in collecting data not explicit in problems, and in making calculations; poor mastery of general and specific techniques, among others. A teaching strategy was designed on the basis of the one suggested by Barreras (2004); it was positively evaluated by experts.
