SURIS, Moraima e GONZALEZ, C. THRIPS SPECIES ASSOCIATED WITH HOSTS OF INTEREST IN HAVANA PROVINCES. I. ORNAMENTAL PLANTS. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.2, pp. 80-84. ISSN 2224-4697.
Due to the importance of thrips in ornamental plants and to the limited knowledge about their host species, the present work was carried out in different localities of the two Havana provinces in 2003 and 2004. Samples were monthly taken from 50 plants of each of the 23 botanical species in four municipalities of Havana City province and from plants isolated in other municipalities of Havana province. Striking the plants over a white cardboard was the method used for sampling. The specimens collected were prepared by traditional techniques of clearing for slide mounting. Identification was done using the regional taxonomic keys for thrips species. The presence of 19 species of thrips was informed showing their relationships with the associated hosts. Frankliniella lichenicola Joh and Mojica , Stephanothrips occidentalis Trybom and Thrips orientalis Bagnall were new reports for Cuba. The highest numbers of thrips species were found in rose and cajigal crops. Frankliniella was the most represented genus, as it happens worldwide.
