GAMEZ FROMETA, Erenia; SANCHEN CASAS, Alexis; DEL RISCO BARRIOS, Ubaldo e HERNANDEZ CISNEROS, Raquel Idania. Isolation of plesiomonas shigelloides cultures of patients with acute diarrheal disease. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.3, pp. 14-25. ISSN 1025-0255.
Plesiomona shigelloides, a gram negative microorganism belonging to the family Enterobacteriacae, has in the last decades been associated to cases of diarrhea and extraintestinal infection worldwide. The present work aims to determine the Plesiomona shigelloides rate and its relation to some epidemiologic matters. Forty-four cultures insolated of patients whit acute diarrheal disease were provided by several hospital and by the Provincial Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, where they were studied from March 2003 to March 2004. Datum collection included polls that involved variables likes age, risk factors, and duration of diarrhea. Feces processing followed the laboratory guidelines of the handbook of acute enteric infections, diagnosis of Plesiomona shigelloides fallowed the Altwegg method, and antimicrobial susceptibility tests followed the Kirby and Bauer method. Children under 5 were the most affected ones whereas nontreated water consumption was the prevailing risk factor (72, 9 %). Liquid stools that did not last for 7 days prevailed. Plesiomona shiguelloides cultures, found to be rather linked to Vibrio No 01, proved to be 100 % chloramphenicol-sensitive and carbenicillin-and-ampicillin-resistant.
