VEGA MONTALVO, Raiza e LAGARTO PARRA, Alicia. Evaluación del efecto antiinflamatorio del extracto de Piper auritum H.B.K. y toxicidad aguda oral. Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 1999, vol.4, n.1, pp. 11-14. ISSN 1028-4796.
Anti-inflammatory activity and acute oral toxicity of 70 % fluid extract from Piper auritum H.B.K., were assessed. Anti-inflammatory effect at a dose of 287.575, and 863 mg/kg, by edema method in rat paw, induced by carragenin, to determine media effective dose, was evaluated. Study was carried out in a comparitive way with indomethacin (1 %) as a positive control. In mice, acute oral toxicity was achieved by means of assessment of median lethal dose (MLD50), where three extract dose level were assayed (10, 14, 18 mL/kg) and that of vehicle (14, 18, 20 mL/kg), and during the study, a body weight gain was obtained. We found that extract has a anti-inflammatory effect, compared to that of indomethacin. A 27.3 %, 39.4 %, and a 49 % of inhibition in edema development, according to different dose assayed, and on determine the MLD50, it was possible that a sigle dose of 816.09 mg/kg caused inhibition in edema development in a 50 %. On estimate comparative MLD50, there weren´t significant differences between them, and extract and vehicle MLD50 values of 13.05 and 16.25 mL/kg, respectively, where the first one corresponde to 1801.99 mg/kg, based on total solids.
