Introduction:
COVID-19 constitutes an emergency for public health due to the high morbidity and mortality that it causes in human beings, a significant economic and psychosocial repercussion.
Objective:
to determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients confirmed with COVID-19, belonging to the health area of the Jimmy Hirzel polyclinic in Bayamo, Granma province, Cuba, during the period January-April 2021.
Methods:
descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional epidemiological study, which included 701 patients confirmed with COVID-19, from the health area of the Jimmy Hirzel polyclinic in Bayamo, Granma province, during January-April 2021. The variables were studied: age, sex, area of residence, source of infection, symptoms and comorbidities. The data were obtained from the COVID-19 epidemiological surveys, and descriptive statistics were used for their analysis.
Results:
in the January-April 2021 quarter, 701 cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in the area of the Jimmy Hirzel polyclinic. Patients from the age group 40 to 59 years (38%), female (52.8%), and those from urban areas predominated. 99.1% had the native source of infection, 69.5% presented symptoms of the disease, with greater respiratory symptoms and fever; 47.3% had comorbidities, highlighting arterial hypertension. No patient died.
Conclusions:
in the investigated health area, female patients with COVID-19 predominated, from urban areas, with an autochthonous source of transmission, symptomatic and without comorbidities. There were no deaths.
