Introduction: Oral cancer is a multi-factorial disease, with an increasing morbidity and mortality rates. Buccal cancer can be detected in its early stages, educating the population in order to identify clinical manifestations. Oral cavity is a part of the human body which can be directly checked. Population´s knowledge about this illness is essential to minimize risk factors and their reach. Objective: evaluate elderly patients’ knowledge about oral cancer. Methods: descriptive and observational study at the Artemio Mastrapa Clinic, in Holguín, from October 2016 to April 2017 was carried out. Universe was formed by 470 patients, who attended stomatology consultation. Sample was formed by 420, according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studied variables were: - Education level. - Risk factors knowledge. -Oral cancer information. -Oral self-examination knowledge. Results: the 54.3% had  average schooling level; 63.1%  with no notion about risk factors; 61.9% with no information about oral cancer and only 1,2 % from  61,9 % was evaluated as Right (R), on oral self-examination knowledge level. Conclusions: average schooling level predominated. The majority of population did not know risk factors and had no information about it. Polled group showed poor knowledge about oral self-examination.
