PRATS ALVAREZ, Olga María et al. Morbidity and mortality of puerperae and pregnant women in critically-ill conditions.Pinar del Rio 2000-2010. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.2, pp. 133-144. ISSN 1561-3194.
An observational, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective research was conducted with a target group of 95, 858 pregnant women and puerperae attending to "Abel SantamariaCuadrado" General University Hospital, Pinar del Rio from January 1st 2000 to December 31st, 2010. The sample was comprised of 561 obstetric patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Age, month in which the morbidity occurred, cause of admission, health conditions at discharge, lethality and ventilation were quantified as variables. The methods used were descriptive statistics, summing up the variables in absolute and relative percentages. Concerning temporality, the worst behaviors occurred during the months of October, November and January with respect to the number of critically-ill obstetric patients admitted in the hospital; ages from 20 to 29 accumulated half of the total admitted in the service, the highest percentage of lethality was observed in obstetric patients from 30 to 39 (8,7%). Hemorrhagic causes expressed the greatest percentage 34.2%, meanwhile puerperal sepsis added the highest lethality (6, 6%). Of the total of deceased, 26 patients needed ventilation, and those ventilated for more than 6 days showed the most unfavorablebehavior.
