CORTEZ-OCANA, Mayra Paola; SUAREZ-LOPEZ, Andrea Gabriela e PORRAS-ENRIQUEZ, María Belén. Psychopathy in couple relationships. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2023, vol.27, suppl.2 Epub 01-Dez-2023. ISSN 1561-3194.
When reading the term psychopathy, many people may generate in their minds images of real or fictitious characters that propitiate acts of terror such as serial murders and horrendous crimes; endowed with peculiar physical characteristics that cause fear to anyone who looks at them; who use tools of torture and firearms; extremely dangerous beings who end up behind bars because of crimes they commit. However, psychopathy encompasses diverse characteristics, being that many psychopaths are integrated to life in society without raising the slightest suspicion of their pathology, many are married, have children, renowned and well-paid jobs, hold political positions and far from having an appearance that would produce terror, they can be charismatic people, with social qualities that produce sympathy in those who know them superficially. This disorder has two variants, the primary psychopathy whose beings adapt easily to society being difficult to discover them and the secondary psychopathy that is characterized because the beings commit frequent criminal acts, have impulsive behaviors and are judged with custodial sentences. This study reveals the importance of determining the possibility of the existence of psychopathy in affective couple relationships in order to promote a culture of mental health in society.
