The article presents a diagnosis of the level of vocational guidance of those who enrolled for Medicine at Nuevitas´ university polyclinic in the academic years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. A descriptive transversal study was carried out to assess the level of the vocational guidance of students before they began the medical course. Results showed that 89.1 % of the students primarily opted for Medicine, the level of the vocational guidance of the 84.7 % was deficient, and to be useful to the country was the prevailing reason (95.6 %) of their choice. These deficiencies influenced on the 34.7 % of dropouts due to an inappropriate role of institutions involved. In addition, there were some other reasons that influenced on their decision-making.
