Background: Medicine doctors generally have a poorer mental health than the general population, since they are exposed to a number of important risk factors that often cause psychosocial dissatisfaction with their profession. Objective: To assess the degree of satisfaction of specialists in general medicine with their practice in Primary Health Care in Sagua la Grande. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted from September to December 2009. The universe consisted of 113 general practitioners, from which a sample of 105 was selected. The following techniques were implemented: questionnaire on satisfaction levels, Satistec 1 and 2, and Job Descriptive Index questionnaire. Results: The questionnaire on satisfaction levels showed that there is little overall satisfaction with their current practice. In techniques Satistec 1 and 2 dissatisfaction of doctors was showed in the 9 factors that were measured. The Job Descriptive Index showed results consistent with those of previous techniques. The following variables presented a critical situation: communication, leadership and motivation. Conclusions: There is a high degree of dissatisfaction among general medicine specialists working in Primary Health Care in Sagua la Grande.
