CABRALES MUNOZ, Norka e GOMEZ DIAZ, Francisco. Darning, Folds, Discontinuities: The Configuration of Santiago de Cuba’s Ring. au [online]. 2015, vol.36, n.2, pp. 5-18. ISSN 1815-5898.
The defence system of Santiago de Cuba was configured around the colonial city with a wire-fence joining the fortresses along its perimeter. This system evolved into the Ring of the old city, joining four different sectors - Alameda, Martí, Libertadores and Trocha - in response to projects or processes of consolidation across the time. This Ring, the city’s point of articulation, was the place where Santiago’s principal public spaces and facilities were inserted; it was recognized as a structure of high significance for its heritage values, tangible as well as intangible, while it also provided the place where the main activities of popular culture found expression. This study endeavours to analyse the historical process of the Ring’s evolution and its urban characteristics, with a view to evaluating its significance in the urban context. It permits a definition of the Ring’s heritage values, to serve as a strategy of darning with the aim of eliminating the discontinuities which have arisen through the city’s consolidation process.
