LIMA ALVAREZ, Lorenzo; GRAU LEON, Ileana Bárbara; GUTIERREZ ROJAS, Ángela Rosa e DIAZ MACHADO, Antonio. Effectiveness of one-session endodontic treatment in permanent teeth with pulp necrosis. Infodir [online]. 2023, n.40 Epub 01-Abr-2023. ISSN 1996-3521.
Introduction:
When the pulp is altered by inflammatory degenerative diseases, what is known as pulp necrosis occurs. The main causes are untreated caries, trauma and multiple invasive treatments on a tooth.
Objective:
To evaluate the effectiveness and costs of one-session endodontic treatment in permanent teeth diagnosed with pulp necrosis.
Methods:
A prospective descriptive observational study was carried out at the Faculty of Stomatology from January 2016 to December 2020, which included the evaluation of the effectiveness of the conventional endodontic technique in one session compared with the technique developed in several sessions and an economic evaluation of the treatment. The variables studied were demographic, clinical, technique-related and outcome variables.
Results:
92.5 % of the patients treated in one session had effective treatment, 81.0 % had no postoperative pain, and 90.5 % had no signs of inflammation. Postoperative pain with predominantly mild pain intensity occurred in 19.0 % of the patients. The cost increased by 85 % for two treatment sessions and for three sessions or more it was 160 %.
Conclusions:
Conventional endodontics is effective for the treatment of permanent teeth with a diagnosis of pulp necrosis, independent of the number of sessions; but costs are lower when a single session is used.
