ABSTRACT Background: the younger generations need to know the African roots that contributed to the formation of the Cuban identity and culture. Objective: to characterize the African influence in the formation of the Cuban identity and culture. Methods: it was carried out a documental research work, during the second semester of the academic year 2014-2015 in Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences. Methods of the theoretical level were used: historical-logical, analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction and empiric level methods: the documental analysis of scientific articles, books, pictures and other historical sources of several authors, who are recognized specialists with high command on the topic. Results: the entry to Cuba of the African slaves and their customs, habits of life, religiosity, chants, dances, identification with nature and the use of herbal medicine has left its influence in the identity and the Cuban culture conformed on the base of a wide miscegenation process. Conclusions: the Cuban identity and culture are the results of the intercultural process due to the mixture of native roots, Hispanic, African, and of other people; this process is the melting pot of knowledge on the history of the nationality and it constitutes a legacy that the new generations should defend.
