The antecedents, principles and the method that must be followed in the investigation connected with the present conception of the drug utilization policy are explained in this paper. This conception tries to bring the economic approach to the same qualitative dimension of the clinical approach in order to reach conclusions in both directions that may be used as elements of decision in the health services, particularly in the prescription and utilization of antibiotics
