MARTIN GONZALEZ, Miguel Angel  e  FERRA BETANCOURT, Albio. Resultados obtenidos con el tratamiento quirúrgico en el cáncer esofágico. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2003, vol.42, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2945.

To find out morbidity and mortality of this therapy that is provided to the patients admitted to "Hermanos Ameijeiras" clinical and surgical hospital, a prospective, descriptive study was conducted in which means and percentages were estimated and Pearson´s correlation test was applied. Seventy one persons with esophageal cancer were studied for the last 7 years, 49 (69%) with surgical prescription and 22 without surgical prescription. Of the 49, 37 were males and 12 females averaging 56 years of age. Forty three were resectable cancers, 21 operated on by McKeown technique. Stomach was used and jejunostomy performed in 100% of cases. In the last 7 cases, no gastric drainage procedure was applied. There were 7 accidents (16,3%) and 22 complicated patients (51.2%), mainly due to cervical fistula (16). The mortality rate was 14% associated with sepsis and age over 60 years. To improve these outcomes, we should better the cervical esophagogastrostomy technique, avoid sepsis and evaluate the risk of this procedure in over 60 years-old people
