MENA MIRANDA, Vivian R.  e  RIVERON CORTEGUERA, Raúl L.. Óxido nítrico/sepsis: Controversias en su metabolismo, funciones y utilización. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 1999, vol.71, n.4, pp. 238-244. ISSN 1561-3119.

Nitric oxide(NO) is a powerful endogenous vasodilator which is stimulated by constitutive nitric oxide synthase and inducible nitric oxide synthase enzimes from L-arginine substrate. The constitutive nitric oxide synthase enzime is dependent calcium and it keeps the physiological balance in those tissues where it is released. On the other hand, the inducible nitric oxide synthase enzime is independent calcium which is released under inflammatory conditions and contributes to serious hemodynamic inestability since it causes refractory hypotension. At present, there are several suggested therapies for controlling NO production and exogenous administration.

Palavras-chave : NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE [metabolism]; NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE [physiology]; NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE [therapeutic use]; SEPSIS [drug therapy].
