INTRODUCTION: Obesity is increasing in epidemic proportions at worldwide, and many times starts from childhood, being necessary its prevention from early ages. The aim of present paper was to characterize obesity in adolescents according to frequency of presentation, presence of personal and family backgrounds, inappropriate lifestyles, and comorbidities. METHODS: From January to June 2006, a retrospective and cross-sectional study was made including 180 adolescents from 4 consulting rooms of "Plaza" Polyclinic. Study variables were: age, sex, weight, height, girdle circumference, arterial pressure, foods consumption frequency, physical and sedentary activity times, personal backgrounds of breastfeeding, birth weight, and family backgrounds of obesity, mellitus and gestational diabetes. RESULTS: One of each 5 adolescents had a body overweight. The high birth weight, family backgrounds of obesity, diabetes, gestational diabetes, and fatty foods and sugars consumption were higher in overweight adolescents. One of each 3 adolescents with overweight body had a pre-hypertension or high blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Body overweight and obesity are frequent in adolescents and a significant way; they were related to a high birth weight, and high blood pressure as a frequent comorbid process.
