INTRODUCTION: the gingivitis is the more frequent periodontal disease present in young patients involving the soft tissues surrounding tooth without to damage the support tissue. OBJECTIVE: to determine the relation among the oral hygiene and gingivitis in young people. METHODS: a cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study was conducted from September, 2008 to July, 2009 including a sample of 300 young people of male sex. A survey was made to measure the theoretical knowledges on oral hygiene. The brushing effectiveness was achieved through the Love's index. Using the Silness and Löe gingival index it was possible to determine the gingival health status. RESULTS: the 45.6 % of examined patients had a qualification of regular in knowledge on oral hygiene. The 82 % was affected with predominance of moderate gingival inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: it was conclude that there is an inverse relation between the oral hygiene and the gingivitis.
