GALAZ, Mariateresa. The Sculpture Museum at the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) in Mexico City. UH [online]. 2023, n.297  Epub 20-Jun-2023. ISSN 0253-9276.

In México as everywhere in Latin America there is a Classics tradition as the source for the inspiration of local artists along several centuries. Certain Spanish institutions were reproduced in New Spain, as the Real Academia de las Tres Nobles Artes de San Carlos: Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, in 1781. Since the beginning Painting and Sculpture tended to mix up, whereas Architecture also played the role of Urbanism: its tendency was not only to build new spaces, but also to make them with ornatus, as everybody can appreciate it in colonial buildings and monuments at the Centro Histórico of Mexico City. The Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL) was born in 1982 to offer a panoramic vision of Mexican History and Art; the opening for the first time of a Sculpture Museum within the Museo, in 2016, gave Sculpture its own space, not constituted with copies of Classical models, but with original Mexican sculptures whose subject are Classical themes.
