In this article a pragma-dialectical analysis of the tensions and dramatic conflicts of the “hero” in the verbal discourses of the characters Jorge and Sara in the Costa Rican play El héroe (1956) by Alberto Cañas is carried out. To this end, the construction of the spaces of the house, of the conflictive past-present temporality and of the personality of Jorge, the main actor, in the rhetorical and dialectical spheres, are considered in order to propose some of the reasons why Cañas ended up opting for the aesthetics and rhetoric of the contemporary anti-hero, which are still present in Costa Rican literature.
