MORENO DEL CRISTO, Aluned. Classical Rhetoric and Cuban Sacred Oratory of the 18th Century. UH [online]. 2023, n.297  Epub 20-Jun-2023. ISSN 0253-9276.

During the 18th century, sacred oratory in Cuba reached great literary quality and was one of the most cultivated genres. Religious orators were numerous in this period and among them excelled Rafael del Castillo y Sucre (1741-1783), whose oratory work is preserved in two speeches. The aim of the present work was to analyze one of these, the sermon “Oración eucarística por el nacimiento del Infante de España Carlos Clemente” (1771), and to examine to what extent it responded to the classical rhetorical canons. After carrying out the analysis considering the traditional parts of rhetoric (mainly inventio and dispositio), it was possible to conclude that the structure of the discourse maintains, in essence, the model established by the ancient authors. In general, the studied sermon constitutes a representative piece of the eighteenth-century sacred oratory, which, governed by the European influences and the classic models, became an indisputable manifestation of the prevailing ideology in the indicated period.
