ALMAGRO, Delfina. Hemostasis and cancer: Participation of the coagulation mechanism in cancer. Rev Cubana Hematol Inmunol Hemoter [online]. 2005, vol.21, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2996.

The association of cancer and thrombosis is common in patients with diverse types of malignant diseases. It has been proved that the tumoral cells interact with all the essential components of hemostasis. The malignant cell produces and releases substances with procoagulant activity, fybrinolotic proteins and cytokines that have a determinating influence on the activity of the coagulation mechanism. Two types of procoagulant substances of the tumoral cells have been characterized: the tissue factor and so-called cancer procoagulant. The tumoral necrosis factor-alpha, the interleukin-1 Beta, and the vascular endothelium growth factor, a cytokine with a recognized action on the hemostasis and the neoangiogenesis, are also released by the tumoral cell. It is considered that the formation of fibrin takes part in the progression and tumoral metastasis. The presence of a hypercoagulability state in patients with cancer has been confirmed by the finding of a marked increase of the specific markers of the coagulation activation. The disseminated intravascular coagulation is a frequent complication of the malignant diseases, in particular, of the promyelitic acute leukemia
