A comprehensive prospective assessment of the149 older adults living in "Pedro Luis Almaguer" Home for the Aged in Banes municipality was carried out from January to February 1999. The essence of this research work was explained to the elderly who gave their consent to participate in it. Data were obtained from the medical histories of the older adults. Of the cases studied, 34.2% were females and 65.8% were males. When analyzing their affections, we found that 15.3% suffered from blood hypertension. As to their mental status, we observed that 26.8% had senile dementia; the analysis of their physical condition showed as the most significant figure that 6.7% of them was blind. 94.60% of the studied elderly had an acceptable relationship, 18.1% needs the assistance of a therapist and the nursing staff to do exercises. The assessment of the nutritional state of the elderly of our institution showed that 84.5% were normoweighted.
