FONTICIELLA BENITEZ, Paula; ECHEVERRIA DUBE, Dania  e  ALMEIDA FORTE, Alicia. Comportamiento del cáncer de mama en el municipio Consolación del Sur. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2001, vol.17, n.2, pp. 116-121. ISSN 1561-2961.

Since the first cause of death from malignant diseases is breast cancer, we made a retrospective descriptive study with female patients aged 20-77 in Consolación del Sur municipality from January-December,1999. These patients were evaluated in the municipal classification medical service of breast pathologies and were suspected of suffering from any affection caused by this entity. Factors related with breast cancer morbidity in our area were analyzed; statistical measures like absolute numbers, percentages and prevalence/incidence rates were used. All the cases diagnosed with breast cancer were surveyed. The highest number of cases was found in white women, with the lowest educational level, non-working females and living in rural areas. The disease was more frequent in the 4th and 7th decades of life. The prevalence rate was 22 per 10 000 pop. and 56.2% of cases was detected by family physicians. The highest percentage of cases was diagnosed at stages I and II; the death rate was 21.3 per 10 000 pop.
