A descriptive retrospective study was conducted from January, 1995, to June, 1997, at the 17 physician offices of a basic working group of the "Santos Suárez" Teaching Polyclinic. A sample of 236 mothers of children that were born between 1995 an 1996 was selected. These women were surveyed aimed at identifying maternal factors associated with the giving up of exclusive breast feeding before the 4th month. It was found that most of mothers gave up exclusive breast feeding before the 4 months (52,5 %) and that the maternal factors more fequently connected with it were: age (under 20), student mothers, primary school level and primiparity.
