A descriptive study was conducted with 507 children from the Central Community Teaching Polyclinic of Camagüey that were discharged from the Provincial Pediatric Teaching Hospital of that city during 1998 in order to characterize them. A survey was designed according to the criteria of some experts, including the following variables: age groups, type of attention, complications observed, average stay lenght, and final evolution. The data obtained were processed in a compatible IBM microcomputer. A MICROSTAT statistical program package was applied. Most of the children admitted were between 1 and 5 years old, accounting for 45.7 %. 70.4 % of admissions were from the traditional care sectors. These were the most important results. It was observed a higher occurrence of complications, a longer stay length of less than 48 hours, and a greater unsatisfactory evolution among children from the traditional care sectors. The most common causes of admission were bronchial asthma with 13.4 %, acute respiratory tract infections with 6.9 %, and acute diarrheal diseases with 6.50 %.
