Summary A review on the topic of cleft lip and cleft palate is made. The general aspects that should be taken into consideration in primary health care are approached. The paper is divided into fundamental items, such as epidemiology , etiopathogeny, classification and conduct to be followed. It is stressed that the family physician should know this pathology and be linked to the multidisciplinary team giving medical attention to these patients.
