This paper makes an extensive literature review on health surveillance, its historical background and the development of epidemiological surveillance both in Cuba and the rest of the world. Also, reference is made to the characteristics of the surveillance systems, their objectives, the different types of surveillance as well as the attributes that should be taken into account when implementing a health surveillance system.
