GONZALEZ, C  e  SURIS, Moraima. THRIPS SPECIES ASSOCIATED TO HOSTS OF INTEREST IN HAVANA PROVINCES: III. HORTICULTURAL PLANTS. Rev. Protección Veg. [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.3, pp. 144-148. ISSN 2224-4697.

Few studies for determining the species of thrips present on horticultural plants have been done in Cuba. For detecting the presence of thrips on this group of plants, 20 botanical species belonging to nine families were sampled in nine municipalities of Havana province during 2003 and 2004. The specimens collected were captured by batting the plants on a white card. Adults were clarified and mounted in slide techniques; and for identification, regional taxonomic keys were used. Results indicated that 19 genera and 27 species of thrips belonging to the families Aeolothripidae, Phlaeothripidae and Thripidae were found. The highest incidence occurred on cucumber with 48.14% of the total number of species of thrips, carrot with 44.44%, tomato with 33.33%, green beans, red pepper and garlic with 29.62%. The lowest incidence occurred on lettuce and water melon with only one species respectively, which represented 3.70% of the detected species of thrips. The genera Ameranathrips Mound and Marullo, Bayleyothrips Kono and O´Neill, Chaetanaphothrips Priesner, Nesothrips Karny, Stomatothrips Hood and the species Ameranathrips herediae Mound and Marullo, Bayleyothrips limbatus Hood, Caliothrips impurus (Priesner), Chaetanaphothrips orchidii Moulton, Chaetanaphothris leeuweni Karny, Nesothrips lativentris Karny, Scirtothrips longipennis Bagnall and Stomatothrips angustipennis Hood constituted new reports of thrips for the country.
