Some antecedents related to the arising of endocrinology as a science are exposed. The main features and symptoms of exophtalmic goiter as an endocrinological disease are decribed. The years of appearance of the oldest bibliographic references known all over the world on this disease were also indicated as well as the first research published in Cuba related to this condition of endocrinological glands. A brief comment on a communication presented in 1863 at the Academy of Physical, Natural and Medical Sciences of Havana by the doctor Carlos J. Finlay was provided. This communication had the strong significance of being the first scientific research published by the Cuban wise and the first article on exophtalmic goiter published in a scientific journal edited in the island.
