REYES SANAME, Félix Andrés et al. Clinical and epidemiological characterization of patients with metabolic syndrome. ccm [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.4, pp. 1293-1313. Epub 01-Dez-2019. ISSN 1560-4381.
Introduction:
metabolic syndrome comprises a group of risk factors for ischemic cardiopathology and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Objective:
to characterize clinically and epidemiologically patients with metabolic syndrome.
Method:
a descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study was carried out, between January and November, 2018, at the internal medicine service of Guillermo Luis Fernández Hernández-Baquero Hospital in Moa, Holguin province, Cuba. From the study universe made up of 108 patients with metabolic syndrome, a simple random sample of 80 patients was selected, taking into account inclusion criteria. In all the statistical tests, data analysis by convention was considered, with a significance level under 0.05, a confidence interval (CI) of 95%, normal distribution, and the use of the Student t-test.
Results:
women prevailed over men with 61.2%, predominating the group from 60 to 69 years old with 45%; among the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, arterial hypertension prevailed in 97.5% of the cases; housewives stood out with 45%; type 2 diabetes mellitus turned out to be the most frequent complication of metabolic syndrome; 41.2% of the admitted patients remained in hospital between 7 and 14 days, 28.7% of them, belonged to the group with complications.
Conclusions:
the obtained results coincide with several studies done in the country, therefore, it is urgent to design prevention strategies to avoid complications.
