LUJAN HERNANDEZ, Marta. Tendencias y pronósticos de las infecciones nosocomiales en la provincia de Cienfuegos. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2002, vol.40, n.1, pp. 20-25. ISSN 1561-3003.

A descriptive and retrospective study on the behavior of nosocomial infections in the province of Cienfuegos from 1989 to 1998 was conducted to analyze the trends and make prognoses for 1999, 2000 and 2001. The primary datum was taken from the registry of information of intrahospital infections of the Statistics Department of the Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology, where the following data were collected: total of discharges by services and hospitals, septic cases reported, localization of the infections, microbiological studies, positivity and cuasal germs. These data were included in a questionnaire. Information was processed by computer and the Epinfo program was used. The trends and prognoses were obtained by utilizing the lineal regression equation by the method of quadratic minimums. The results are presented in a graphic and tabular way. It was found that the trend of intrahospital infections in the province is descending. It was also possible to reduce postsurgical sepses, whose decrease was predicted for the next triennium.
