A descriptive study was made to characterize the population of 366 children infected with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS in Cuba till the year 2004. A survey covering variables such as age, sex, province of residence, schooling, serological condition with respect to HIV and health condition was administered. The province with the highest percentage of infected and/or affected children was City of Havana with 37,4 %; males accounted for 53 % and females for 47 %. The risk of being infected with or affected by the disease is higher in the 5-9 years-old group with 31,1 %; 46,1 % of seropositive persons to HIV belong to the 15-18 years-old group; the educational level of 48 % of children was elementary education and the serological condition in 84,7 % of them was HIV-negative. It was concluded that males and place of residence in the City of Havana province prevailed; the risk of being infected with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS was higher in the 5-9 years-old group, most of the HIV seropositive children were included in the 15-18 years-old group, the estimated number of children living with HIV was low, elementary education was predominant and the majority of children was HIV-negative from the serological viewpoint
