OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the relationship between the water quality parameters and the development of the biological agents. METHODS: 1 169 samples from the health units selected in the capital during 2005 were studied. Three specific parameters were considered in the chemical assessments: pH, conductivity and the presence or not of reducing substances. In the case of the bacteriological techniques, the internationally standardized techniques and those standardized in the country were used. RESULTS: the most frequent isolations proved to be the nonfermenting bacteria with 40,0, 36,0 and 30,0 % of correlation in the resistance spectra (Method/Bauer-Kirby) of Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. The highest "in vitro" percentages to the antimicrobials assayed by pharmacological groups corresponded in general to tetracycline and chloramphenicol for the bacterial strains under study. CONCLUSIONS: the need to prioritize these services as the focus of attention was evidenced, and real difficulties were found in the disinfection process and in the working dynamics.
