Introduction:

AIDS means acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is the final stage of HIV infection. Not everyone with HIV develops AIDS.

Objective:

Characterize AIDS diagnosed patients in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba.

Methods:

Descriptive and retrospective, cross-sectional study from January, 2014 to December, 2018. The sample consisted of 106 patients diagnosed with AIDS. The primary data were extracted from the sexually transmitted infections´ programme of Palma Soriano municipality. Among the variables of interest were sex (male and female), age, school level, marital status, occupation, sexual orientation, screening group and patient location.

Results:

In the studied period there was a tendency to the disease to increase, with an average of 21.2 cases per year. People aged 15-49 predominated (88.68%), with a minimum value of 17 years and a maximum of 67, and an average age of 33.7 years. Male patients were the most present (75.45%). High school education level predominated with 39.63% of the cases. 82.07% were single, 39.63% were heterosexual and 36.79% unemployed. 34.91% were recruited as screening group, of which the 84.91% are in outpatient care.

Conclusions:

AIDS diagnosis increased in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba with predominance of the young, heterosexual, single and high school level´s male adults, as well as people with outpatient medical care.
