LUGO FALCON, Naylet et al. Relationship between glucose levels and endogenous antioxidants in gestational diabetes. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2024, vol.28, n.1  Epub 01-Jan-2024. ISSN 1561-3194.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:

gestational diabetes corresponds to the alteration of glucose metabolism, which appears during pregnancy; but pregnancy is also a state of oxidative stress. Objective: to relate glucose levels with endogenous antioxidants at different times of evolution of gestational diabetes.

Methods:

correlational, retrospective, cross-sectional research during the period 2019-2020 in pregnant women hospitalized at the "Abel Santamaría Cuadrado" Hospital in Pinar del Río. Universe: (N=80) pregnant women with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes, admitted to the MG2 ward. Sample: intentional non-probabilistic sample with 30 patients considering exclusion criteria. Shapiro-Wilk tests and Spearman's correlation coefficient with a significance level of 5 % were used to analyze the variables.

Results:

the predominant age group was 30 to 40 years old (66,6 %), multiparous (96,6 %), obese (53,3 %), gestational age between 13 and 26,6 weeks (73,3 %), most of the diabetic pregnant women only underwent dietary treatment (73,3 %) and made their debut during the second trimester. Statistical correlation was found only between glucose and uric acid with a decrease in their levels after 10 weeks of mainly dietary treatment.

Conclusions:

the relationship between glucose and uric acid levels at different times of the disease implies the possibility of using the latter analyte in the indirect assessment of compensatory and reducing oxide status in patients with gestational diabetes.
