Introduction:
emotional intelligence is of great importance in the field of health sciences given the relevance of each of its components in the health professional's work, since it favors the relationship with oneself, with the patient and with the environment.
Objective:
to describe the importance of emotional intelligence in students and health professionals.
Methods:
40 scientific articles on the subject were consulted, obtained from the EBSCO, Medline, Scielo and Google Scholar databases, and 28 were used as bibliographic references, with a predominance of articles published during the last five years and others due to their relevance.
Development:
the development of emotional intelligence in the health field is of vital importance for students and professionals as it favors the establishment of an adequate relationship with the patient and his family, by enhancing affective communication, aspects related to the quality of care and satisfaction with care. It also benefits interpersonal relationships in the workplace, performance, level of involvement and professional satisfaction, avoiding burnout syndrome. To the extent that the person learns to know and control his or her emotions, he or she can respond adequately to the different stressful and emotionally charged situations to which the health professional is exposed.
Conclusions:
the importance of the study of emotional intelligence in the training and work performance of health professionals is highlighted.
