DAMIANI CAVERO, Julieta Sonia. Communicative skills self assessment in biomedical basic science professors. Rev haban cienc méd [online]. 2011, vol.10, n.4, pp. 436-440. ISSN 1729-519X.

Introduction: Few articles about self assessment of communicative skills in biomedical basic science professors exist. This initial diagnosis was done considering these skills that can be developed and to pass trough unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence result a decisive process during skill learning. Objective: to characterize the level of communicative skills on biomedical basic science professors. Methods: a descriptive, non experimental and transversal investigation was done to evaluate expression, empathic relations and behavioural observations in professors that were teaching these disciplines in the initial course of University polyclinic, in three of four scenarios of Enrique Cabrera Medicine Faculty. Results: Lower percents in self- assessment of expression skills in five items, empathic relations in three and one in behavioural observations were founded. Developmental level was middle in empathic relation and expression skills, and high in behavioural observations in grouping descriptions .Nevertheless, three of four was imbalanced in one skill: expression for experienced professors and behavioural observations in facilitators were superior to the others. Conclusions: There are imbalanced communicative skills, with peculiars tendencies between experienced professors and facilitators. The traditional previous roles played like emisors or receptors respectively were probably related with these tendencies. The main suggestion is to conceive a communicative skills training with this initial information.
