GOMEZ GARZA, Gilberto et al. Carotid aneurysm presenting as Takayasu arteritis. Rev Cuba Reumatol [online]. 2015, vol.17, suppl.1, pp. 211-215. ISSN 1817-5996.
Takayasu's arteritis is a vasculitis of large vessels, with involvement of aorta, pulmonary artery and its branches. Vascular inflammation causes wall thickening, fibrosis, stenosis and thrombosis. Its incidence is 2.6 cases per million per year, but in places like Japan has reported an incidence of 1 in 3000 cases. It mainly affects the female gender, appearing in more common form in the second or third decade of life. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with nonspecific symptoms such as fever, sweating, malaise, weight loss, arthralgia or myalgia, to have severe neurological events. This entity has been little studied in the pediatric population. We describe the case of a pediatric patient who had carotid aneurysm as initial manifestation of Takayasu arteritis
