GARCIA GUTIERREZ, Alejandro; DELGADO GARCIA, Gregorio  e  GONZALEZ HERNANDEZ, Leonel. Esophagus surgery in Cuba: XIX-XXI centuries, Bibliographic research. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2004, vol.43, n.3-4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2945.

A review of the historical development of the esophagus surgery practice in Cuba, is made. The first patients operated on of esophagus affections in our country are mentioned: a gastrostomy due to cancer of this organ performed by Dr. Raimundo García Menocal, in 1883, and another for the removalof a dental prosthesis in the cervical esophagus carried out by Dr. Carlos M. Desvemine y Galdós, in 1888. Reference is also made to the introduction of esophagus surgery from that time to December 31 st , 2003, and to each of the different repair, exeresis and reconstructive techniques, which are necessary and complex. It is observed that the greatest advance in this type of surgery took place from the fourth decade of the XX century on. Likewise, the priorities in the introduction of diverse techniques and the modest contributions made by our surgeons in the indications and performance of esophagus replacements, prevention and early diagnosis of necrosis of the organ in the esophagoplasties and in other procedures during this period, are exposed. It is concluded that the Cuban surgeons have kept themselves informed about the progress of these procedures and have incorporated with increasing celerity the world advances achieved in this field to our surgical practice, contributing this way to the development of esophagus surgery for the benefit of the patients
