REYES SALAZAR, Iván Sergio; ESCOBAR YENDEZ, Nilia e ALVAREZ PUIG, Norka. Mortalidad con infarto agudo del miocardio en una unidad de cuidados intermedios. Rev cubana med [online]. 1997, vol.36, n.2, pp. 112-116. ISSN 1561-302X.
A descriptive and cross sectional study was performed in 86 patients admitted to the Intermediate Care Unit of "Dr. Ambrosio Grillo" Provincial hospital, Santiago de Cuba during a 2-year period of 1990-1992. Patients who were studied presented with acute myocardial infarction diagnosed according to clinical, enzymatic and electrocardiographic criteria established by WHO. Most of the patients were 70 years old and over representing the prevalent age group among the deceased subjects. Angina pectoris was the most frequent clinical form of the disease presentation, but the mortality rate was higher in patients in whom the onset of the clinical picture was grade II, III, and IV heart failure. Almost all affected subjects came late to seek medical care. Lethality accounted for 19.77 %. The most frequent complications were arrhytmia and heart failure.
