A bibliographic review of the current use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation was made and its better comfort and advantages were compared with the conventional invasive ventilation. The contraindications, specially in noncooperative, unstable and very severe patients, were assessed. The most important indications on certain situations of respiratory insufficiency were commented. The necrosis of the nasal bridge was the most frequent complication, whereas broncho-aspiration was the most severe. The strict surveillance these patients should have was also stressed. An explanation was given about the use of this technique and reference was made to the present experience of the authors regarding its use.
