Existing controversial topics in relation to preeclampsia/eclampsia were analyzed. It was shown that although the cause is still unknown, increased soluble fibrin-like tyrosine kinase (sFLT-1) in patients affected by this condition suggests that it can interfere with the angiogenic process of placentation and play a pathogenic role. Severe gestational hypertension exhibits higher perinatal morbidity than mild preeclampsia. Aspirin has just a very mild effect in reducing preeclampsia in the high risk group. Magnesium sulphate is useful for eclampsic convulsions in those patients with severe preeclampsia, but its impact on disease progression has not yet been demonstrated. HELLP syndrome may partially occur (ELLP) without proven hemolysis. These cases showed better evolution than the others. It was observed that before 34th week of pregnancy, the expectant treatment based on steroid administration for 48 hours seemed to be a good choice.
