An epidemiologic retrospective study was conducted in the health area of "Antonio Maceo" Teaching Polyclinic, in Cerro municipality, from January 2000, to December, 2002, in order to determine the incidence of low birth weight and to identify the presence of some risk factors associated with this phenomenon. The studied sample was composed of 41 low birth weight newborn infants from a total of 800 live births. The studied variables were: maternal age, history of low birth weight newborn infants, smoking, occupation, parity, the nutritional state of the pregnant woman at the time of catchment, weight gain during pregnancy and the presence of some diseases associated with gestation. The most important results were: a low birth weight index of 5.1 %, the history of low birth weight newborn infant (60.9 %), smoking (53.6 %) and primiparity (51.0 %).
