FUENTES GARCIA, Ángel Raydel et al. Maternal mortality: some factors to be considered 1986-1995. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 1998, vol.24, n.2, pp. 80-85. ISSN 1561-3062.

SUMMARY: A descriptive study was conducted at the"J ulio Alfonso Medina" Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital in Matanzas in coordination with the Maternal and Children´s Department of that province. The medical histories and protocols of necropsy of those mothers who died from 1986 to 1995 were studied. The percentage method was used. The variables studied showed that women with the best fertility conditions, primiparas, with cesarean sections and wished pregnancies represented the case-base study. The maternal mortality rate is high due to direct deaths, mainly toxaemia and sepsis. Some other causes are ectopic pregnancy and the embolism of the amniotic fluid. Cesarean section is closely connected with sepsis and its complications. Cardiopathy was the clinical entity of greatest repercussion among the cases of maternal indirect deaths.
