SANCHEZ SALAZAR, Francisca Rosa; TRELLES AGUABELLA, Edilia; TERAN GARCIA, Reineria María  e  PEDROSO HERNANDEZ, Patricia. Nutrition, supplementation, anemia and pregnancy. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.2, pp. 141-145. ISSN 1561-3062.

180 pregnant women aged 20-29 with iron-deficiency anemia were studied at “Eusebio Hernández” Gynecoobstetric Hospital, from 1996 to 1997, aimed at knowing the effect of nutritional care and iron supplementation on the levels of serum iron. 2 groups of 90 expectants each were created: the study group that was intolerant to oral ferrous salts was daily administered bioestimulin at 9 mg of haemic iron, whereas the control group received 70 mg of elemental iron in the form of ferrous fumarate. On concluding the research, it was proved that the average increase of serum iron in the study group was significantly higher (p< 0.05) than in the control group. A similar behaviour was observed in some nutriments of the consumed diet. The value of the suitable supplementation and adequate nutrition in the control and prevention of iron-deficiency anemia was demonstrated.
