The indicators of perinatal mortality are at present the most efficient way to evaluate the development conditions of a country and of the obstetric follow-up of pregnant women and their fruit. Taking this into account, a prospective descriptive study of the products and neonates that died in 2001 was conducted at "Julio Alfonso Medina" Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital, in Matanzas. Of a total of 3 000 births, there were 9 neonatal deaths in 9 patients, 5 of them early (with the presence of a twin), for a rate of 1.7 x 1 000 live births. 47 patients had the same number of fetal deaths (2 twins) for a rate of 17 x 1 000 live births. It was found that women with the best age conditions for fertility, primigravidas, and with overadded obstetric affections prevailed in the area. The influence of the low birth weight indicator was observed in the two components of perinatal mortality. The results were expressed in percentage and average values.
