A retrospective cross-sectional study of essential hypertensive women aged 40 to 59 years was undertaken in 6 physician's offices randomly selected from those under “26 de Julio” teaching polyclinics, from January 1 st to August 31 st , 2003. Sixty four hypertensive and 64 normotensive women were analyzed. A questionnaire was administered to every patient, which was filled out by her family physician and collected data related to the objectives of our study. Chi square and Z test as statistical methods served to compare ratios. The main manifestations of the climateric syndrome were hot flush in 81.6 % of hypertensives against 61.6 % of normotensives, with significant differences between both groups; anxiety in 76,6 % of hypertensives and 60 % of normotensives, and finally headache in 76,6 % of hypertensive females and 48,3 % of normotensive women, also with significant differences. Obesity and overweight predominated in hypertensive women in addition to smoking and poor physical training.
