MARTINEZ MARTINEZ, Wilmer. Update on bacterial vaginosis. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2013, vol.39, n.4, pp. 427-441. ISSN 0138-600X.

Bacterial vaginosis is a polybacterial disease affecting many women all over the world. The highest prevalence occurs in underdeveloped countries and in population with risky factors such as promiscuity. The disease takes place when lactobacilli from vaginal microbiota are replaced or outweighed in number by Gram negative or Gram variable, strict or facultative anaerobes bacteria that can be found in the gastrointestinal tract and in few concentrations in healthy vagina. The disease may be asymptomatic or presents with leucorrhea and vulvar burning, and in some patients it can cause major obstetric and gynecological complications. The diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis has been a controversial issue. Although some clinical and microbiological diagnostic methods exist, a powerful method for the effective diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis does not exist yet.
