Introduction: genital infection with human papilloma virus plays an important role in the genesis of precursor lesions and cervical cancer. Objectives: To describe the frequency of infection by human papilloma virus, socio-demographic characteristics and history of interest and to identify the possible association of this infection with socio-demographic characteristics and relevant ginecobst variables background. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in middle-aged women in Cotorro municipality who underwent cytological test from June 2012 to May 2013. Two groups were formed, the first had 177 women with cytological finding of papilloma virus and the second group had 165 patients who did not have this virus. Additionally, the association was established among different variables with this reference infection. Results: 68.4 % with viral infection aged between 40 and 49. More than 85 % in both groups had their first sexual intercourse at the age of 15 and 17. Multiparity and sexual relationships were higher in infected women. Conclusions: Among the variables studied at the time, age, parity, marital relationships and existence of concomitant infection were associated to sexually transmitted infection by human papillomavirus.
